Ljubljana, 19 February (STA) – The business daily Finance blames on Tuesday the problems of some of Slovenia’s major banks and companies on the reluctance to embrace the ideals of meritocracy, which it says it rooted in Slovenia’s historical experience under the yoke of Austria-Hungary and Yugoslavia.

According to the paper, Slovenian politicians are burdened by this experience which has taught Slovenians to swindle those in power and swear that they would never again be ruled by foreigners or even less be told what is right and wrong.

We tailor criteria for success to the needs of our people. We prefer our people, even if they are limited, corrupt, incompetent. As long as they are ours, business and profit are guaranteed, Finance says, adding that this conviction has not been changed by the crisis but possibly even consolidated.
