Slovenia has opened a new chapter for digital nomads, remote workers and global entrepreneurs. From November 20, 2025, foreign citizens from outside the EU and EEA will be together with their families. able to apply for the new Digital Nomad EU Residence Permit. This permit supports highly mobile professionals who work remotely for foreign employers or run their own businesses overseas.
This update strengthens Slovenia as a practical and efficient base for global talent, business professionals and long term remote work.
Key points
A digital nomad is a non EU or non EEA national who works remotely through communication technology for a company based outside Slovenia or as a self employed person abroad.
The digital nomad must not be included in Slovenia’s labour market. No labour market approval is needed.
The digital nomad can switch to employment, self employment or another residence purpose if they decide to stay.
Several options open after one year. The nomad can enter Slovenia’s flat tax system, where the effective tax rate is only 4 percent for income up to 60 000 EUR.
The permit is issued for up to one year. It cannot be extended. A new application is possible six months after the previous permit expires. If digital nomad decides to stay longer they can apply for a new residence permit for another purpose at any time during validity.
Required funds equal two times the average annual net salary in Slovenia. The applicant proves this with any lawful source of income.
Family reunification rules are more flexible. Family members can join immediately without waiting periods.
Applications are filed at Slovenian embassies or consulates abroad. Persons already legally in Slovenia file at administrative units.
