As of June 19, 2025, Slovenia has enacted a new Law on the Recognition of Professional Qualifications in Healthcare, aimed at simplifying the employment process for foreign medical professionals. The law streamlines procedures, reduces administrative barriers, and introduces several important changes:
Slovene language proficiency will now be assessed at the final stage of the process, just before the individual begins practicing independently—not as a prerequisite.
Foreign professionals will be able to undergo up to six months of on-the-job training with an employer, supporting smoother cultural and professional integration.
The recognition process will involve qualified expert evaluators (e.g., associations, educational institutions).
Recognized professionals must work for the sponsoring employer or repay associated costs.
A new framework allows temporary registration for foreign experts conducting demonstration procedures, ensuring better oversight.
According to the Ministry of Health of Republic of Slovneia, over 150 candidates are currently in the process of recognition, reflecting growing interest in practicing in Slovenia. While the Medical Chamber of Slovenia remains cautious about the law’s real impact, other stakeholders, such as the Association of Healthcare Institutions, welcome it as a step toward quicker onboarding of skilled personnel. In parallel, a new law on medical devices has also come into effect, enhancing quality assurance and compliance with EU standards for distributors and sellers.
