Ljubljana, October 2025 – According to the latest Henley Passport Index, Slovenia has broken into the top ten of the world’s most powerful passports, ranking 8th worldwide. Slovenian passport holders can now travel visa-free or with a visa-on-arrival to 184 destinations, marking Slovenia’s highest ever position in the index and underlining the country’s growing global reputation for stability, integrity and mobility.
The Henley Passport Index, compiled annually by Henley & Partners, ranks passports based on the number of destinations their holders can access without a visa. The 2025 edition once again highlights European dominance: France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Spain share the top spot with 195 visa-free destinations.
Slovenia’s Global Standing
Slovenia’s passport now ranks just behind New Zealand and Australia, overtaking countries such as the United States and Canada. The result reflects Slovenia’s deep integration into the European Union and the Schengen area, as well as its growing network of bilateral visa agreements.
In July 2025, South Africa officially lifted visa requirements for Slovenian citizens, allowing Slovenes to enter South Africa for tourism and business purposes without a visa. This development, which SIBIZ already reported in our previous article, played a key role in enhancing Slovenia’s global travel freedom and further strengthening ties between the two countries.
Trusted Routes to Slovenian Citizenship
The global popularity of the Slovenian passport has unfortunately led to an increase in fraudulent schemes and online scams claiming to offer “fast track” or “investment based” access to Slovenian citizenship. These are completely false. Slovenian citizenship can only be obtained through legal residence, descent or naturalization in accordance with the Citizenship Act of the Republic of Slovenia, and the process involves official government verification and due diligence.
