According to Slovenian Press Agency Turkmenistan Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov arrived on an official visit to Slovenia today and met his counterpart Karl Erjavec. During his two-day visit, he will also meet Speaker of the National Assembly Milan Brglez, Prime Minister Miro Cerar and President Borut Pahor.

The first session of the Intergovernmental Commission for Economic Cooperation held today, focused on prospective areas of economic cooperation between Slovenia and Turkmenistan and adopted guidelines for further development of this area.

During his two-day visit, the main topics of discussion between Rashid Meredov, who at the same time is also the Deputy Prime Minister of Turkmenistan, and the Slovenian officials will include bilateral cooperation and current international issues, the Slovenian Foreign Ministry said as it announced the visit.

The visit is also seen as preparations for a planned visit by Turkmenistan President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow. Slovenian President Pahor paid an official visit to this Central Asian country in July 2014.

Economic cooperation between the two countries is currently modest, although it has been growing steadily. It reached EUR 12 million in 2013, which was a 43% increase on the year before.
